What are migraines?

Migraines are severe, throbbing headaches occurring on one side of the head. You may experience debilitating migraine pain that lasts for a few hours or several days.

Here are some causes of migraine headaches:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Environmental triggers
  • Changes in the brainstem
  • Brain chemicals imbalances

Migraines often start in childhood or adolescence, but can also develop in adults at any time. Sufferers usually become extra sensitive to light, sounds, smells, and physical touch.

What are migraine symptoms?

Migraines symptoms include throbbing or pulsing pain on either side of the head. Migraines cause increased sensitivity to environmental stimuli, such as light and sound, forcing sufferers to lie still in a darkened room for an extended period of time.

You may experience an aura prior to a migraine attack, including blind spots, flashes of light or a tingling sensation in the face, arms, or legs.

Other common symptoms of migraines include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Lightheadedness or fainting

Following a migraine attack, you may experience bouts of confusion, dizziness, weakness, and moodiness for up to 24 hours.

How are migraines treated?

Dr. Joyce offers several options for treating migraines through chiropractic care. After a thorough review of your medical history, he performs a physical examination to determine the best treatment for your migraine attacks. He will use a combination of chiropractic manipulation, cranial therapy, massage therapy, physical therapy and cold laser treatment.

Reducing bodily tension with physical therapy treatments can also alleviate migraines:

  • Muscular releases
  • Stretching exercises
  • Cold or heat therapies

He may also suggest in-house massage therapy to further reduce tension and stress in your muscles and improve efficient blood circulation. He also offers suggestions for improving your posture and stress reduction techniques to decrease muscle tightness.
