Infertility Q & A

What causes female infertility?

Fertility issues affect one out of six women in the United States. Many women who hope to be mothers experience difficulty conceiving—this is not the same as infertility. You would typically receive an infertility diagnosis after 12 months (or longer) of unsuccessfully trying to conceive.

Female fertility can be the result of underlying medical conditions:

  • Excess weight
  • Cysts or tumors
  • Eating disorders
  • Thyroid problems
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Damage to the cervix, uterus, or fallopian tubes

Numerous illnesses can also affect the functionality of the uterus and fallopian tubes, including infections, endometriosis, and congenital disabilities.

What tests diagnose female infertility?

Dr. Schultz may order several tests to determine if you match the criteria for a female infertility diagnosis. These tests may include the following.

Ovulation Testing

Ovulation predictor testing kits are available over the counter and detect an increase in the luteinizing hormone that surges before ovulation. In the office, Dr. Schultz may request blood work to check hormone levels, including prolactin and progesterone, which your body produces after ovulation.

Ultrasound

Dr. Schultz regularly uses pelvic ultrasounds to identify internal abnormalities, like fallopian tube damage or uterine diseases. Ultrasounds also rule out health issues that could affect your ability to conceive. After an evaluation of your ultrasound images, she can order additional tests to pinpoint a diagnosis.

Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a small camera to identify problems in the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Dr. Schultz makes a small incision underneath your belly button and inserts the exploratory camera. A laparoscopy identifies a variety of medical conditions:

  • Birth defects
  • Blockages
  • Diseases
  • Endometriosis
  • Excess scar tissue

Genetic testing may also be necessary to determine if genetic defects are causing your infertility issues.

What are the treatment options for female infertility?

Dr. Schultz recommends treatments based on your cause of infertility, age, and other factors. Infertility is a complex issue that requires the experience of a trained medical professional to resolve. Dr. Schultz conducts thorough testing to determine the causes of infertility. She uses the information from your test results to choose the best treatment options.

Dr. Schultz may recommend standard medical practices, functional medicine, nutrition, or acupuncture to increase your chance of conception. Because of her comprehensive approach, Dr. Schultz enjoys a great deal of success with in vitro fertilization, and many of her patients have healthy pregnancies as a result.
